For
planting and harvesting/curing instructions, please contact me – I will send
you an entire written document of the in-depth instructions, with
climate-specific notes. Or check online. The
rules are simple but absolutely MUST be followed for good
germination, especially heat and humidity requirements.
Variety
is a Virginia Gold Heirloom tobacco (N. tabacum), but I like to joke they’re
“Great Lakes Gold”, since I grew them right here in the
beautiful Great Lakes State!
Specifically,
these fresh seeds were harvested from mature tobacco plants in southeast
Michigan (USDA Zone 6a). I have no idea if they are more hardy to cold
temperatures but they certainly coped with them here 😉
In all
seriousness, the plants were sown, fed (with organic compost), watered, and
harvested by hand, including the seed which was painstakingly beat out of the
seed pods with a mallet.
Please
note: The seeds are EXTREMELY small, some of the smallest of
any crop. Your quantity will appear small, but rest assured I have actually put
far more than the 2,000 advertised in the title. For ballpark numbers, 1
gram tobacco seeds = 1 teaspoon = 10,000 seeds. Yes, you’re reading that right.
I put about 1/4 teaspoon (2,500 seeds) so you don’t think I’m cheating you.
